In Elizabethan times the castle was home to Sir John Perrot, and was granted to him by his half-sister Queen Elizabeth I, although later she had him accused of treason and he died in the Tower of London. Now managed by the National Park Authority as an attraction and home to the rare greater horseshoe bat, making it a candidate Special Protection Area. Nearby is Carew Cross, one of the finest 11C. crosses in UK, which carries an inscription in honour of Margiteut, King of Deheubarth. Its characteristic wheel head inspired the logo of Cadw, HM Govt's Heritage Agency in Wales. The tidal mill is the only restored one in Wales.
